Large Carved Wooden Indian Flour Chest

This delightful carved wooden chest is from Himachal Pradesh in northern India.

Flour chests like this are used for storing flour, of course. After harvesting, the wheat or barley grains would be taken to the local flour mill, probably water powered at the side of a stream or nala. Flour mills may be communal, they're also a gathering point for the local people. It's not unknown that chang, the local barley beer, would be partaken. To excess.

This is a simple construction, heavy wooden boards are jointed with tenons secured with wooden pegs. The lid is simply hinged and the whole construction can be used as a sturdy seat when the lid is down. The front panel is decorated with a double leaf design inside a double arch.
