A Pithora Painting from Gujarat of a line of dancers with hand cymbals and peacock feathered head gear.

A vibrant Pithora painting from Gujarat in Western India. Like most Indian folk art there has been a transition from painting on the walls of village houses to also painting on paper, in this case a thick sand-coloured paper.

Four dancing figures almost naked save for loin cloths, with bodies painted with white circles and elaborate peacock feathered headdresses, are shaking hand cymbals while they dance in unison. They are surrounded by a vibrant coloured border.

One characteristic of Pithora paintings seems to be that the figures are painted with a huge grinning face. The colours are bright and the painting is full of life.
