Indian Painting of a Cow and Suckling Calf

Regular price £75.00

A delightful painting of white Indian cow & calf with handprints on a dark green background.

In this painting a white Indian cow with decorated horns, gold sashes and a peacock feather is turning to watch her calf suckling. The cow is decorated with vermilion hand prints, the calf with coloured patches; the cow is licking the calf's behind. The painting is on dark green cloth.

In March this year, 2026, we were reunited with Raj Kumar, our favourite driver in India, for two weeks in Rajasthan. Raj is a farmer who comes to drive for us. We've known him for a few years, he's been our driver before and we always learn a lot about farming in Rajasthan and Haryana, his home state. Although we've seen India's cows many times Raj really opened our eyes to their beauty and when we found these beautiful paintings in we couldn't resist them.

Raj doesn't think too highly of the white cows, he thinks their milk yield is too low because they eat whatever they find including cardboard and waste and because they're sacred to Hindus they're allowed to wander everywhere including the motorway. Raj keeps water buffalo and this year we went to meet his family at their home - and we met his buffaloes; two adults and a baby. Lovely!

Supplied with a white card mount.
