Dokra Brass Statues of Women Reading Books

Wonderful dokra statues of reclining tribal women reading books.

These are very unusual, beautifully made brass statues of reclining women reading books. Made in the dokra style of tribal India.

Dokra is one of the ancient metal casting crafts of India that dates back over 4000 years. A rough clay shape is covered in wax that is finely carved to create the final shape of the statue. This is then covered in clay with a drain duct for the wax to excape in the next stage when molten brass is poured into the mould. 
The surprising weight of this delightful statue is partly due to the original clay core.
