A lovely old red stained make up box from India
This box has five internal compartments to contain red turmeric or vermilion paste - used to apply the red tikka mark applied to the forehead.
Boxes like these are also used for make-up by dancers such as the Kathakali dancers of Kerala.
A well used box worn smooth over many years. The top of the circular box is carved with designs that resemble the spokes of a wheel.
