Large Embroidered Wallhanging from Gujarat

Regular price £600.00

This vintage embroidered hanging from Gujarat would have been used to decorate a wedding courtyard.

This is a very large embroidered wallhanging from Gujarat consisting of five large embroidered and mirrored squares connected to each other and an embroidered top panel by printed and tie dyed squares of cotton. The lower edge is finished with embroidered pendants in the toran style.

The embroidery is a typical Kutch mixture of chain, cross and satin stitch. This is an old piece and there are areas where the satin stitch embroidery has worn away but it is a superb and unique piece of work. There are hundreds of tiny shesha mirrors sewn into the panels which glisten magically in candlelight.

The reverse side has a magic of its own. The fabric, mostly indigo dyed on the front, is a soft madder red on the reverse and the patterns of the stitching tell another unique story.

Early to mid 20th Century.
