We managed to find a guide in the local village who guided us up the riverside cliffs to a narrow path leading to a small complex of caves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA break in the rock face led us into the small round cave dominated by a broken central stupa; pages of prayers from inside the stupa were scattered on the ground. Yakshas exist in Hindu mythology but also in Buddhism where they are said to be nature spirits, one of the eight nonhuman beings mentioned by the Buddha.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey are said to support the Dharma and are \u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eportrayed either as fearsome warriors, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eportly, stout and dwarf-like. But they can also be malevolent. It is said that when Padmasambhava left Tibet he went to conquer the troublesome yakshas.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA Tibetan lama friend living in Sheffield has seen something similar in Tibet standing behind a main shrine. He thinks it possible that the hands are raised above the head in a position to be able to hold the world.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe details on the back of the figure represent the sun and moon, possibly indicating that they exist in the spirit world, out of time and space. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe multicoloured paint is peeling in places, mostly where it has weathered on the top of the head.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA very heavy piece. The setting is spectacular but we passed by for several years before realising we could visit the site.\u003cbr\u003eConnected by a narrow ridge and not shown in the photo is the ruin of a tall thin building that was once the lookout post. In the opposite direction a long steep climb to the pass takes you over three stunning days of trekking to Zangla in the Zanskar valley.\u003cbr\u003eTen years ago on a high path to Lingshed we looked down on excavators edging a road along the scree slopes of the Zanskar river attempting to forge a road from Padum to Nierak. Four years later they'd made no progress. We understand this plan is on hold and instead a road is coming down to the wooden bridge. Our friends in the village are sanguine about the changes that they know are coming. The setting is spectacular but we passed by for several years before realising we could visit the site.\u003cbr\u003eConnected by a narrow ridge and not shown in the photo is the ruin of a tall thin building that was once the lookout post. In ten days of walking in this remote part of Ladakh we saw no other trekkers. The mountains to the north – our intended trekking route – were the scene of unusually dramatic and turbulent weather and the sky grew blacker.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe mountains to the south of Ladakh used to act as a bulwark against the monsoon but in recent years the rains have crept over bringing more unstable weather.\u003cbr\u003eFascinated, we didn’t want to leave but the temperature plummeted and pressure started to roll down the hills towards us, followed by heavy drops of rain. We ran back towards town, everyone was on the move. Lower down the valley is a hill with a Japanese Shanti Stupa and people and cars were heading there for the high ground.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe made it back to the lane near our hotel in Changspa where people were building flood defences. The Changspa stream was a torrent of trees and boulders and we didn’t know if the bridge would hold. It did, but downstream there were mudslides above downtown Leh and Choglomsar, the Tibetan colony.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe mountains of Ladakh are a mix of hard rock and dried mud with embedded rocks. When the dried mud becomes saturated with water it turns to liquid and rolls down the hillside with all the loosened boulders. Which is what happened after the cloudburst - mud poured down the hillsides and through doors and windows filling buildings to over a metre.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe spent the first week digging mud out of schools, houses and hospitals. After a few days the water seeps away and the mud and rock solidify again – inside your house – and can’t be moved.\u003cbr\u003eLeh was cut off for a few days - bridges, communications.
