Regular price £25.00

A photo of the Buddha Amoghasiddhi at the ancient Ajanta Caves in Maharashtra, central India

This photo is of the Buddha Amoghasiddhi with his right hand raised in the mudra of fearlessness. It is one of a series of seated Buddhas that form a frieze in cave 26.

The Ajanta caves depict the life of the Buddha and were carved out of the hillside by hand using only hammers and chisels 1500 to 2000 years ago. They were unknown for more than 1,000 years until 1919 when they were discovered by John Smith, a young British cavalry officer.
