Large standing Buddha statue
A very large, heavy Buddhist statue with hands raised over the head, carved from a single piece of distressed painted wood.
The initial impression is of a Buddhist figure but the image bears little resemblance to typical Buddhist iconography.
A Tibetan lama friend living in Sheffield has seen something similar in Tibet standing behind a main shrine. He thinks it possible that the hands are raised above the head in a position to be able to hold a globe.
Perhaps the influence is from further north than Nepal, maybe Mongolia. A very unusual old piece.
The details on the back of the figure represent the sun and moon. The multicoloured paint is peeling in places, mostly where it has weathered on the top of the head.
A very heavy piece.
