Agrasen ki Baoli Stepwell & Mr Singh, Delhi | Stepwell Photos

Regular price £25.00

Agrasen ki Baoli stepwell is in the centre of New Delhi, only 5 minutes from the bustle of Janpath.

Stepwells like this are built as long stepped trenches that descend to the water level. The hard granite of Delhi means that, unlike many other stepwells built in softer rock, arched buttresses aren't necessary to keep the side walls from collapsing. This preserves the sense of being open to the sky and affords a clear view from the steps to the arches of the back wall.
Looking up from the bottom chambers you'll see hundreds of bats who live on the underside of the roof arches.

A narrow opening in the back wall at the bottom level leads to the circular well shaft covered with a metal grid to prevent anyone falling in! The well is dry.
