Chand Baori, Abhaneri, 2025 | Stepwell Photo

Regular price £25.00

A wide angle photo of the Chand Baori stepwell at Abhaneri, Rajasthan, taken in 2025.

Chand Baori is thought to be the deepest stepwell in India. Over 3500 narrow steps and twelve levels lead vertiginously down three sides to the water. The only obstacle is the fencing installed to prevent accidents.

At the lower levels you can see 10th century Hindu carvings; the pavilion facing you in the photo is a 18th century Moghul addition in Islamic style.

Abhaneri is on the main road between Agra and Jaipur and easy to visit. There is an ancient temple with superb stone carvings on the adjacent site.
