Five Standing Buddhas, cave 19 at Ajanta | Photos of India
Five standing Buddhas at the entrance to cave 19 at the ancient Ajanta caves in India.
There are five statues of the standing Buddha, one larger than the others, at the entrance to what I think is cave 19. There is a lot of contradictory information about the location of carvings at Ajanta and my notes have some gaps!
There are a total of 30 caves in Ajanta containing paintings and carvings depicting incidents from the life of the Buddha.
They were carved out of the hillside by hand using only hammers and chisels.
The Ajanta caves were abandoned 1500 years ago and unknown for more than 1,000 years until 1919 when they were discovered by John Smith, a young British cavalry officer.
Landscape format. I've shown this image with a black border as a presentation suggestion because I think it suits the image - the prints are supplied without a border.
