Illuminated Standing Buddha, Cave 4, Ajanta | Photos of India
Display lighting has been used to illuminate this beautiful statue of the standing Buddha in cave 4.
The Buddha's right hand is reaching out in a gesture of generosity, the left hand is raised to the shoulder. The gaze is full of compassion.
The Ajanta caves depict the life of the Buddha and were carved out of the hillside by hand using only hammers and chisels 1500 to 2000 years ago. They were unknown for more than 1,000 years until 1919 when they were discovered by John Smith, a young British cavalry officer.
