A photo of the Meditating Buddha in Cave 19 at the ancient Ajanta Caves in Maharashtra, central India.
The carving of the meditating Buddha is inset into a frieze that runs like a horseshoe around the central Buddha and Stupa inside cave 19 at Ajanta. Cave 19 dates from the 5th century CE.
The Ajanta caves depict the life of the Buddha and were carved out of the hillside by hand using only hammers and chisels 1500 to 2000 years ago. They were unknown for more than 1,000 years until 1919 when they were discovered by John Smith, a young British cavalry officer.
Landscape format.
We've put a black frame around the image as a presentation suggestion. The prints are supplied without a border.
