Nyoma Monastery, Changtang | Photos of Ladakh

Regular price £25.00

This photo of the Nyoma monastery shows the beautiful landscape & hills of the Changtang in Eastern Ladakh.

The Changtang is a high altitude plateau that extends from eastern Ladakh into western China. In 2019, for the first time, we were able to get permits to visit Hanle, very close to the border with China.
Hanle is the site of the Indian government's astronomical observatory, located there because the population density is so low and the light pollution among the lowest in the world.

The drive passes through stunning landscape and several ancient monasteries. In this photo the monastery at Nyoma village is set against the plains and mountains of the Changtang.
The monastery was closed because all the monks were at Hanle receiving teachings from His Holiness the Gyalwang Drukpa, the charismatic head of Hemis monastery who has been successful in promoting the role of nuns in the Buddhist order.
