Karsha Monastery | Zanskar | Photos of Ladakh

Regular price £25.00

A photo of Karsha monastery showing how the monastery sits on a long ridge above the Zanskar valley.

Karsha is the largest monastery in Zanskar. It sits on a ridge that runs down to the valley bottom near Padum; this view is from the nunnery on the adjacent ridge.

In the late afternoon fast-moving clouds dapple the mountains on the far side of the valley. When we arrived in 2016 most of the monks were still making their way back from Leh where they'd gone to hear the Dalai Lama's teaching on the Bodhicharyavatara, a guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life. Three days earlier we'd also been there hearing the teachings.

A few years earlier we'd been at Karsha when the monks were rehearsing for the following day's masked dance ceremonies.
