Chortens are Buddhist reliquary monuments containing sacred relics and ashes. In India they are known as stupas, in Tibet, chortens. The mani stones in the foreground are carved with the sacred mantra Om Mane Padme Hum. Rising up in the background is the magnificent ridgetop Thikse monastery.
