A photo of an archway & staircase in a beautiful wooden house along the old Tibet-Hindustan highway in Kinnaur.

Kinnaur is a steep sided forested region that once connected India with Western Tibet. The culture has an interesting mix of Hindu, Buddhist and Animist traditions and the buildings are built from wood and stone, cleverly interlocked to survive the frequent earth tremors.

We came across this village at the end of a walk near Kalpa. The houses were interconnected and resplendent with carvings and wooden balconies. They were all twisted out shape from the movement of the  ground.

I love the detail of the small silver vessel on one of the steps.

Portrait format. The image you get is the second image showing more of the woodwork.
