Nahar Dhoos ki Baoli Stepwell, Bundi, Rajasthan

A beautiful and very elegant stepwell in pale coloured stone, one of many on the ouskirts of the beautiful small town of Bundi.

An active place of worship, there are Shiva tridents on the way down and orange shapes with silver tridents painted on the walls.

A series of steps lead down in two stages under a fluted archway before the final vertiginous steps lead down like an inverted zigurrat to the water. The camera can't take it all in one frame.

The person who commissioned this well was cremated here and there is a shrine to his memory before the final descent. The caretaker told us that all wishes will be granted to those who offer puja here. This photo was taken in February 2017. On a second visit a year later I cracked my head on a low lintel and sustained a bloody but trivial headwound.
