Toorji Ka Jhalara Baori in Jodhpur, Rajasthan

The Toorji Ka Jhalara Stepwell is in the very centre of the old blue town of Jodhpur but unless you know where to look you'll never find it.

This photo was taken in March 2025 when musicians were sitting on the steps, waiting to be filmed for a traditional music video. Boys jumped off the roof into the water adding to the drama.

The other photo of this stepwell was taken several years earlier, in 2017 when I first discovered it. I'd been to Jodhpur many times but never knew of its existence until I was looking at a video of the adjacent Raas hotel. Local environmentalist Rajesh Joshi is almost single-handedly responsible for clearing and restoring this amazing structure which had fallen into disuse. It seems pristine and has become a popular site for local people and a few tourists who know of it. It featured briefly in the Best Marigold Hotel film.
