1000 Armed Avalokiteshvara, Saspol, Photos of Ladakh
This magnificent fresco featuring the 1000 Armed Avalokiteshvara is in a cave at Saspol, Ladakh.
These cave paintings date from the 13th Century and were a revelation when we fist saw them, having driven past Saspol village on many occasions. Saspol is a small village near the famous Alchi monastery and the paintings were possibly made by the same Kashmiri artists as the work at Alchi.
Considering their age they are in remarkably good condition although the blue and green pigments have faded leaving black, ochre and red as the predominant colours and leaving some images as a ghostly outline
