Carved Panel of a Bird from Ladakh
An unusual light wood carved wall panel of a bird and flower.
The extravagant scene in this carved panel shows an elegant bird with head turned back to look towards its long and elaborate tail. The bird is surrounded by leaves and a large flower.
This was made as a tuition piece at a college in Ladakh where students are trained as wood carvers. Elements of the carving are reminiscent of the decorative carving style found in the Buddhist monasteries of Ladakh in northern India.
