Earth Touching Buddha, Cave 11 | Photos of Ellora Caves, India
This sublime carving of the Buddha with Earth Touching Mudra is in Cave 11 at Ellora.
The Bhumisparsha or Earth Touching Mudra is one of the most power Buddhist mudras or hand gestures. It symbolises the Buddha's assertion of his enlightenment and right to sit on the diamond throne.
Caves 11 and 12 are known as Do Taal, Two Floors. In fact a third floor was discovered later so it isa also called Teen Taal.
Probably built around 650CE.
We've put a black frame around the image as a presentation suggestion. The prints are supplied without a border.
