Head of the Buddha, Cave 4, Ajanta | Photos of India
A detail of the head of the beautiful statue of the standing Buddha in cave 4.
You can actually see the chisel marks on this ancient statue. The gaze is full of compassion.
The Ajanta caves depict the life of the Buddha and were carved out of the hillside by hand using only hammers and chisels 1500 to 2000 years ago. They were unknown for more than 1,000 years until 1919 when they were discovered by John Smith, a young British cavalry officer.
We've put a black frame around the image as a presentation suggestion. The prints are supplied without a border.
