Large Carved Indian Makara Mythical Sea Creature

Regular price £300.00

A large carved mythical sea creature called a Makara.

Makara is a mythical animal seen in several variations in both Hindu and Buddhist cultures of India, Tibet and south east Asia. In Tibetan this hybrid creature is called chu-srin.

It is standing upright on rear legs, a long tail reaching up above it's head may be symbolic of a peacock's tail. The head has horns and an elephant like trunk and long tongue. Fish scales running down the back of the neck become a lion like mane. It has an erection and pronounced testicles.

Made to be mounted on the wall, possibly at the side of a doorway or frieze.

Carved from one piece of wood.

Dimensions: height approx. 90cm
