Monks gathered at the entrance to Samye monastery holding sticks of fragrant incense.
These monks had made the journey from Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, and were waiting in the vestibule of the temple with bunches of incense, paper money for the shrines and white khatas, scarves offered in Tibet as a sign of respect, for the statues of the Buddhas.
Samye monastery is where Buddhism became established in Tibet in the 7th Century.
