Finely Carved Vintage Ganesh Kadavi, Black Wood
Regular price
£595.00
A magnificent carved Ganesh kadavi in a black-brown wood from South India.
Similar to the Carved Ganesh Panel in a reddish wood, this is a very fine and elaborate vintage Ganesh carving used in a Burden Dance in the South Indian Tamil festival of Thaipusam.
Two curved columns decorated with birds at the base rise to a plinth with seated Ganesh surmounting a large mouse. Four elaborate columns and two acolytes supporting water vessels on their heads rise from the plinth above which is a series of diminishing levels representing the upper floors of a temple.
In the Burden Dance devotees of Lord Murugan (the son of Shiva and brother of Ganesh) carry a physical burden or kavadi on behalf of a loved one who may be in need of healing. Thanks to Artisera, www.artisera.com for this information.
