Olive, Navy & Red Ajrakh Indian Bedspread
Olive, navy & red patterns are combined in this Indian bedspread with a complex Ajrakh print & deep border.
This is a heavier weight bedspread with two layers of cotton fabric stitched together with rows of fine running stitches known as kantha. The border and reverse more clearly show the lines of ivory & navy stitching against plain indigo cotton.
The bedspread is hand block printed using the Ajrakh technique, a skill that dates back thousands of years. It is now mainly practised by the Khatri community in the state of Gujarat. Carved wooden blocks are used to create the patterns in a complex process that uses natural dyes and involves up to 14 stages of washing and dying.
It is fascinating that while these bedspreads come in many colours, they all use only the same three natural dyes, indigo, madder and ochre. The lovely green in this bedspread is obtained by mixing the blue indigo with the yellow ochre.
Size: King size approx 220x270cm. In India this is called a double bedspread. It is suitable for double, king size and super king beds.
Cold machine wash with non-bio detergents.
