Sunlight on the Buddha, Cave 10, Ajanta | Photos of India
A shaft of light falls on this painting of the Buddha on a stone column in Cave 10 at Ajanta.
This painting of the walking Buddha is painting in a style derived from Gandhara.
The Ajanta caves depict the life of the Buddha and were carved out of the hillside by hand using only hammers and chisels 1500 to 2000 years ago. They were unknown for more than 1,000 years until 1919 when they were discovered by John Smith, a young British cavalry officer.
The oldest cave at Ajanta, Cave 10 was the first to be discovered.
We've put a black frame around the image as a presentation suggestion. The prints are supplied without a border.
