Teaching Buddha & Bodhisattvas, Cave 9, Ajanta | Photos of India
A photo of the Buddha with Teaching Mudra flanked by Bodhisattvas in cave 9 at Ajanta.
Above the Buddha are several devas carved into the ceiling. One of the standing Bodhisattvas is holding a fly wisk.
Cave 9 was started in the 1st century CE and further worked in the 5th century.
The Ajanta caves depict the life of the Buddha and were carved out of the hillside by hand using only hammers and chisels 1500 to 2000 years ago. They were unknown for more than 1,000 years until 1919 when they were discovered by John Smith, a young British cavalry officer.
We've put a black frame around the image as a presentation suggestion. The prints are supplied without a border.
