Journey to Zanskar 10"x8" Book
Journey to Zanskar - from Lamayuru to Karsha
Peter Bennion (Mahaprasara), one of the directors of the Silk Road Gallery, has been travelling to Ladakh - at the northern tip of India between Kashmir & Tibet - on a regular basis for 20 years. This book is an account in photographs & narrative of a trek he made in 2008 from Lamayuru monastery in Ladakh to Karsha monastery in neighbouring Zanskar.
It is supplemented by more visits in the subsequent years in which he met many of the people from that first visit. In 2023 he and his partner deepened the connection even further with a return to three of the villages mentioned in the book.
This book is a beautiful record of a changing world: new roads mean that the trek that took 8 days can now be covered in less than six hours! The road brings many benefits, we've never met anyone living there who doesn't regards it as a profound improvement to their lives, but for those of us who loved the slow progress of walking in near solitude there is a deep sense of loss.
