Avalokiteshvara's Hands in a workshop in Lhasa

Chenresig's Hands, Workshop, Lhasa | Photos of Tibet

Regular price £25.00

A close up of a pair of hands on a newly made statue of Avalokiteshvara in a workshop in Lhasa.

We came across a workshop making new clay images of the Buddha and Bodhisattvas in downtown Lhasa. These hands were part of a rupa, or statue, of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, known to the Tibetans as Chenresig.
Several rupas were sitting on the floor, drying, before being given a final polish and being sent to the painter in another workshop.
Many of the precious silver rupas in the monasteries destroyed in the Cultural revolution are being replaced with clay versions.

See a photo of the full rupa here.
