Kumbum Chorten, Gyantse | Photos of Tibet

A photo looking at the spectacular Kumbum chorten at Gyantse as a woman walks across the courtyard.
The Kumbum chorten, or stupa, is one of the most extraordinary buildings in Tibet. It contains 108 cells, or chapels some the size of small rooms, that contain 100,000 Buddhist images.
Restoration, hopefully being applied skillfully, is taking place and scaffholding surrounds an upper level. On our previous visit in 2002 the upper chapels were open but on this occasion in 2014 they were closed.
Landscape format.
