Gyantse Dzong (Fort) sits atop a rocky outcrop that rises from a flat plain in front of pale hills.

The Dzong, or fort, sits above the town and looks down over the monastery and the wonderful Kumbum stupa. The Dzong was built in 1390.

The British invasion of Tibet in 1904 included a dramatic battle to take the Dzong that has to be thought of as another dark chapter in the history of British Imperialism. The British used heavy weapons to attack the Dzong and then commenced pillaging and looting the monasteries.
A museum in the Dzong gives an account of the brave Tibetan resistance.

The development of Tibet between our two visits in 2002 and 2014 has been dramatic. New concrete and steel cities have sprung up next to old Tibetan towns. In 2014 Gyantse was still a lovely town that hadn't yet been dwarfed by a new Chinese style city.
