Camels on the old Silk Road, Nubra, Ladakh 2010

Ladakh was on the Silk Road before the Chinese annexed Tibet in 1950 and closed the border with India. Camel trains would come down from Yarkand loaded with wool and salt to trade in Leh for cotton, silks, spices and dyes.

These two humped dromedary camels remain in the flat Nubra valley to the north of Leh. It is said that a few wild camels, left to their own devices, also exist in the more remote valleys.
