A photo of a nameless stepwell bathed in golden light somewhere along the road from Alwar to Rajgarh.
Today we drive from Alwar to Rajgarh before carrying on to Jaipur. I know there's a stepwell halfway between Alwar and Rajgarh but: can we find it? We asked for directions; they said turn left opposite the Reliance petrol pump, then left again. No signposts. Just word of mouth. That’s how we found this local stepwell - known simply as Baori.
As we arrived, a young boy zipped past on a bicycle; a woman in a vibrant sari balanced a water pot on her head. Through a tangle of undergrowth, ancient steps lead down into silence. Five tiers of carved archways descend into the earth - once echoing with the splash of water, now hushed and dry.
Golden light slants across moss-covered stone, choked with sand and weeds. Insects hum in the stillness. It feels like time has stopped here.
Once beautiful with elegant pillars and arches, now a forgotten wonder silting up with deep drifts of sand. The locals think it's haunted; only one young man will come down the steps with me.
On one of the vaulted corridors at an upper level someone has placed posters of Radha and Krishna. Perhaps local couples come here for a tryst.
