Photo of Ujala Baoli Stepwell, Mandu
A wide angle photo of the stunning Ujala Baoli stepwell at Mandu, Madya Pradesh.
The Ujala Baoli at Mandu is an unusual asymmetric design with a wide set of steps leading down past pavilions set into a vertical face which opposes another vertical face with passages and pavilions.
On the two other opposing sides pale stone steps zig zag down to water; some extending up to ground level. Further steps disappear into water. On all sides there are arched niches.
Most of the render that once covered the surface of the walls has been lost revealing the pale stone of the original construction.
This is a beautiful well and it has a beautiful name: Ujala translates as light.
About 100 metres away is the sister well, the Andheri, or dark well. Photo 2026.
