Avalokiteshvara Statue | Kanji | Photos of Ladakh

Regular price £25.00

A photo from Kanji, Ladakh, of a statue of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion

You have to bend double to enter the small dark gompa in the village of Kanji. Avalokiteshvara is flanked by the Medicine Buddha and Green Tara.

Late afternoon sun coming in through the small door casts some light on the central figure of Avalokiteshvara. There are good murals too, although one of the mandalas on the side wall had been too damaged by rain before the villagers raised money for restoration and repairs to the roof.

Kanji is one of our favourite villages in Ladakh. It's at a junction of three trails. To the north is a new road through a canyon that leads to the Leh-Kargil road. There are trekking paths in two directions to the south. One leads over the difficult Kanji La and on to Rangdum monastery, the other to Hanupatta and Photoksar and south to Zanskar.

It's been harvest time on all our visits and most of the villagers were out in the fields gathering the harvest.
