A photo of the L shaped Bhawaldi Baoli stepwell, one of the hidden gems of Bundi in Rajasthan

The L-shaped Bhawaldi Baoli is one of Bundi's hidden gems. Although it's in the centre of town, albeit down a long winding lane, it's hard to find and the gate is locked. The keyholder is a friendly woman in the house opposite who will also show you around a small haveli that she hopes to convert into a guest house.

A fine carved stone Jain portico leads down wide steps to a platform where the walls are inset with unusual carved figures. There is a left turn to the steps that lead down to the well proper with sheer vertical pink stone sides.

The well is hemmed in by houses and the roof of the well is covered with translucent sheeting which dogs and monkeys play and fight on.

This image was taken by Tsering Dolma and stitched together by Peter Bennion.

Square format.
