Neemrana Stepwell, Rajasthan

A photo of part of the interior of the spectacular Neemrana stepwell in Rajasthan.

The photo shows three of the nine storeys of this underground well built in 1740. We passed by this well several years ago but no-one mentioned its existence. Surrounded by only a low wall it's all but invisible unless you know where to look.

The stone is crumbling but with care you can descent to the bottom which was dry in February 2017. The water table in rural India has now dropped below the bottom level of many stepwells and they are no longer used.
