Shrouded in mist on the hilltop pass of the Dochu La on the road between Thimpu & Punnaka are 108 chortens.
Layers of distant hills can just be seen among the constantly shifting mist and low cloud.
They are known as victory chortens and were commissioned by the Queen Mother of Bhutan to commemorate the soldiers who were killed in defeating the insurgency of Assamese (Indian) soldiers in 2003.
We were in Bhutan in early October at the tail end of the monsoon; the low cloud often obscured the view but added to the atmosphere. There's a similar group of 108 memorial chortens on the road to Tawang in India's Arunachal Pradesh a few hundred miles to the east.
