This magnificent chorten in the classic style of Mustang is on the long ridge at Tsarang monastery.

In 2013 we trekked along the valley of Upper Mustang to the "capital" of Lo Montang before turning back south eventually arriving at Tsarang monastery, the old capital of Mustang. From there we rode horses for a day before the landscape became too dificult and we continued on foot.

Chortens, called stupas in india, are reliquary buildings containing the ashes of important lamas or thousands of printed paper Buddhist prayers, usually both. Mustang has many chortens in this elborate and colourful style. The vibrant pigments are made from the local minerals; the grey stripes indicate it belongs to the Sakya Tibetean Buddhist tradition.
