Red Arches of the Octagonal Stepwell, Fatepur Sikri | Stepwell Photos
The beautiful Octagonal Stepwell is hidden away just outside the Elephant Gate at Fatepur Sikri
This is an unusual stepwell with stepped entrances leading down to a gallery that runs around the octagonal interior. Only one entrance is open, the others terminate in latticed jail stonework windows, as you can see in the photograph.
The gallery has a series of arches leading to chambers one of which houses a shrine to a Muslim saint. Steps from here lead down to the water, if there is any - none when we were there in February. The stone is the wonderful red colour of Fatepur Sikri.
Portrait format.
The thumbnail is cropped to our standard thumbnail proportions, the image you will get is the slightly longer one.
