Regular price £25.00

A photo of the distant Shanti Stupa nestled in mountains, prayer flags in the foreground, Leh, Ladakh.

Shanti stupa, or peace pagodas, have been built by Japanese Buddhists around the world. There are seven in India and others around the world. This sits atop a hill on the edge of Leh, the town of Ladakh. The photograph was taken from prayer flag bedecked Tsemo Fort, another hilltop location in Leh.

On 10th October 2010 the upper Leh valley was struck by a cloudburst. We were at the head of the valley as turbulent black clouds gathered followed by a huge change in air pressure and a torrential downpour. We hot footed down the valley and could see people crowding up the high ground taking shelter at the Shanti stupa.
Streams became torrents bringing down trees; lower down the hillsides turned to mud that filled houses, schools and hospitals. We spent the next week digging out mud as part of the rescue operation.
