The Great Stepwell at Jhunjhunu 1 | Stepwell Photos
A photo from the far end of the Great Stepwell at Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan.
I call this the far end because you enter the well at the opposite end. To take this photo I'm standing next to huge circular well shaft which connects to the steps below via a series of tunnels. The well shaft is even deeper than the bottom steps. Adjacent to the well shaft are masonry columns which supported winches to lift water from the well. The water was drained into a series of settling tanks to separate out the silt.
This photo was taken in 2022, five years since our last visit and in that time shrubs and low plants have started to become established. Nonetheless it's relatively well maintained.
