The Buddha is sitting on a lotus throne cross legged with the right hand in the Bhumisparsha, earth touching, mudra. At the moment of the Buddha's Enlightenment he was assailed by Mara casting doubts on the reality of his experience. In response the Buddha touched the earth and the banished Mara.
