In March 2018 I resumed my search for the subterranean architectures of western India known as stepwells. This took me near a village called Viratnagar, close to the location of an old Buddhist site called Bhairat.
The old village of Kanji is one of the reasons for planning this trek. We came here in 2012 at the end of a long trek from Zanskar and always wanted to return. It's a delight to explore the old lanes of the village.
Kantha is a type of embroidery stitching typical of rural Bengal. Village women repurpose old saris to make quilts, shawls and cushions to create a new item - what we would today call upcycling.
We have a new improved website to go with our new store - and we hope you like it! We're the same people, Peter and Kay, with the same ethos. If you knew the old site you'll find all your favourites and more here.
