Journey to Ladakh

Journey to Ladakh The flight from Delhi to Leh is a wonderful one hour flight over the snowy peaks of the Himalaya. Sitting on the left the views are bester and you may see K2, sitting on the right makes for a more exciting landing. Coming in to land you appreciate that Ladakh is a high altitude desert, grey brown mountains with rare threads of tiny green valleys. Today it's preparation time for our trek. We search the downtown bazaars in Leh until we find some bowls to give as a present to Stanzin and his wife Sonam. Then we have some last minute shopping for colourful 'Tibetan' blankets for the trek. They're an essential extra layer of warmth and comfort for the cold nights ahead. At the very last minute, just before...

The Silk Road: Pangong Tso and Changtang

21st August 2017: An early start for our drive from Leh to Pangong Tso, the lake that straddles the India/Tibet China border in the region known as Changtang, which the Silk Road passed through between Ladakh and Tibet, north of Mt Kailash and south of the Kun Lun mountains. The early morning roads are quiet and we avoid the traffic in lower Leh until we hit the roadworks by the main Leh gateway and a diversion takes us through back streets. In 2010 this area was washed away by a flash flood a couple of days after we arrived. Leh...
