The painter Howard Hodgkin was a keen collected of Indian Miniatures although he only collected the larger pieces. Indian Miniature paintings are often commissioned for books and are usually executed on paper. You will also see similar styles of painting on a larger scale in palaces such as these at Bundi, a small town in Rajasthan.
We head into a magical world with the drawing of the deer's antlers which morph effortlessly into the branches of a tree, complete with numerous side branches, leaves and buds. Gond drawings and paintings are always magical but this drawin seems to be full of the appreciation of life and vision of harmony that is typical of the art of the Gond people.
The Gond are a large tribal group mostly located in the central Indian state of Madya Pradesh. They decorate the walls of their houses with images of the world as they see it, where nature seems to be in harmony, plants, trees, birds, insects and even humans.
