Old Carved Ganesh Panel, Red Wood
Regular price
£495.00
A magnificent carved Ganesh panel in a rich red brown wood from South India.
This is a very fine and elaborate carving with two curved columns decorated with birds at the base rising to a plinth with seated Ganesh surmounting a large mouse. Four elaborate columns and two acolytes supporting water vessels on their heads rise from the plinth above which is a series of diminishing levels representing the upper floors of a temple.
Used in a Burden Dance in the South Indian Tamil festival of Thaipusam in which devotees of Lord Murugan (the son of Shiva and brother of Ganesh) carry a physical burden or kavadi on behalf of a loved one who may be in need of healing - thanks to Artisera, www.artisera.com, for this information.
